Brett Oetgen
Brett recently joined Catapult in a career that in one way or another, has always been about leadership. His primary area of expertise at Catapult is in the role that leadership plays in building employee engagement and creating great places to work. A former senior consultant at employee engagement survey specialists JRA, Brett believes that a prerequisite to building a sustainable, high-performance organisation, is having leaders with the right knowledge, skills and perhaps most importantly, the right attitude. His experience with organisations that successfully build strong levels of employee engagement, is that it is always leadership-led. Positive organisational change only happens when leadership transformation has taken place, which is why employee engagement is directly linked to leadership.
Brett spent the early part of his career in advertising. After 12 years he made a change and established the NZ office of New York-based management communication skills training company, Peter Rogen & Associates. Brett and his family then moved to Toronto to establish the Canadian office of Rogen International, leading the business to the top of its field in that market. A last move with Rogen saw Brett establish the Rogen Learning Centre in Sydney. During this time Brett completed an MBA in International Management.
On returning to New Zealand Brett began to specialise in leadership consulting and leadership development and worked as a leadership coach/consultant to a variety of New Zealand organisations.
A former Canterbury rugby representative, he spends too much time on the couch watching rugby and telling the players and referees what they’re doing wrong. And when he does occasionally break away from the sports channels, it’s usually to the kitchen to further his burgeoning second-career as a master chef.
